How We Research
Every guide on Yellow Cal answers one question: will this ladder fit the job and the person who climbs it? For a ladder, that comes down to height, duty rating, material and how easy it is to move and store.
Here is how we work it out.
1. We start with the job
Changing a porch light, painting a stairwell and cleaning gutters each need a different ladder. A 2 ft stool is the wrong tool for a 12 ft ceiling.
We match the ladder's height and reach to the work. When your space limits the choice, like a narrow stairway or a low garage, we say what to look for.
2. We check the specs and the rating
We look at the ladder type, height, the highest standing step, material (aluminum, fiberglass or steel), weight, folded size and the ANSI duty rating on the label. We also note handrails, tool trays, platforms and leveling feet.
Some sellers print a weight claim that is higher than any ANSI duty rating. We report the duty rating, and we name the brand when we mention its own claim.
3. We read buyer feedback
We go through what owners report after using a ladder. We look for patterns, like wobbly legs, stiff locks, sharp edges, missing parts or a heavier ladder than expected.
One bad review doesn't sink a ladder. A pattern does.
4. We score each ladder
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A ladder that's great for a kitchen may score lower in a guide for high ceilings.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep guides current
Ladders change, and some leave the store. We check model numbers and link only new units, never renewed or used ones.
We check the CPSC recall list before we pick a ladder, and we skip models with a known problem. When we change a guide, the "Updated on" date changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have climbed every ladder we cover.
We never call a ladder safe. Read the label and the maker's manual before you climb, and stay within the duty rating and the highest step the label allows.
